Sony is critizied for tactics
The former president of Warner Home Video has criticised Sony for the tactics it has employed in the battle of the next-gen DVD formats - and for dragging home entertainment companies into the console war.
In a speech delivered at the Perspectives in European Video conference, Warren Lieberfarb said: "If I put Blu-Ray in PlayStation and I don't license it to Microsoft for Xbox and I get all the studios to only publish in PlayStation, I'll beat Microsoft in the next-generation games market. We've been sucked into PlayStation versus Xbox."
Lieberfarb went on to compare Sony's strategies to those used by Samurai swordsmen, stating: "If you ever read The Art of War, you will see all of Sony's moves, including taking all its enemies in the same tent and then leaving them empty-handed. These are things that they have done historically."
"They did the same thing to Matsushita and Betamax, they did the same thing to Matsushita on compact disc, they did the same thing to Matsushita on the digital video camcorder," Lieberfarb continued.
"They compete like Samurai. It isn't the way we compete in the West."
Lieberfarb said that although it may look like Blu-Ray is set to win the battle of the next-gen formats, the war is not over yet.
"Hollywood blew it. They got duped. They could have created the format that optimized their creative interests. It looks like we lost, because there are six studios supporting Blu-Ray and only three supporting HD-DVD. But you know, there's always surprises," Lieberfarb stated.
He concluded by urging the industry to join Microsoft and Toshiba in supporting the HD-DVD format, telling the audience: "Convergence is here, everything is digitall, the Internet is going to deliver video, you are going to want to pass information from one device to another and HD-DVD versus Blu-Ray is really the first battle in the issue of who controls the home."

PS3 Spring 2006 or Fall 2006
I get this question all the time. I don't even know why people ask me this question. When will the Playstation 3 hit stores? Sony say spring 2006 and EA say fall 2006. But remember Sony will lauch the PS3 in Japan first. So the could be both.
Sony Corporation said it remained on track to roll out its PlayStation 3 game console by spring 2006 despite industry speculation that the scheduled launch could face delays.
The timing of the release of Sony's updated PlayStation console has become a matter of speculation in the $25 billion video game industry and among the studios, hardware makers and other companies looking to handicap the battle over next-generation DVD technology.
A spokesman for Sony, the No. 1 provider of game consoles, said it was still targeting a spring 2006 launch for the PS3, which is key to maintaining its lead in the game console market against Microsoft Corporation, which recently launched its competing Xbox 360 console.
Larry Probst, chief executive of the No. 1 video game publisher Electronic Arts Inc., said last week that he believed Sony's console would not be available until fall 2006.

Sex For XBOX 360
How far would you go to get an Xbox 360? Well, if one Craigslist.org ad were to be believed, two Boston-area women would do just about anything to get their hands on the next-gen console. Under the headline "trade sex for an xbox 360," a person claiming to be a 22-year-old woman said "Me and my roommate are totally hard core gamers, but our desperate attempts to get an Xbox 360 have gotten us nothing so far." The poster told responders to "send me a photo of you holding the system, and tell me what I have to do to get it." She did not mention any particular lewd acts but said her roommate was also willing to join in, despite being "really shy." But while the poster was apparently willing to debase herself to get an Xbox 360, she still had standards. "I'm looking for the PREMIUM system, not the shitty watered down one," she said. Was the ad for real? We'll never know. Inquiries sent to the e-mail address went unanswered, and the posting has since been removed by the ever-vigilant Craigslist Community.

XBOX 360 Able To IM Mobile Phones
Jason Langridge, Enterprise Mobility Solution Specialist at Microsoft UK division, has revealed that the software giant is working on a new feature that will allow Xbox 360 users to send instant messages using the MSN Messenger infrastructure, thereby reaching any device running the program, including cell phones.
"So on my device I sign in with my MSN account and it sets up Hotmail," explained Mr. Langridge to the BBC. "There is no service fee and you can do MSN messaging chats."
The alerts would be sent by Xbox 360 users over the Internet via Xbox Live and be received by a cell phone over the air as an instant message. Langridge could not say when the new Xbox 360 feature will go live, but added: "It is six months or so. It is very, very near."
hey, i think its a cool feature. its a good way for people to reach you without giving out your phone number. whats the point if you can plug any usb keyboard into the 360, you might ask.
your 360 isn't always on and you're not always at home.

XBOX modders faces jail time
Two owners of a los Angeles game store and a third man face up to five years in prison on charges filed Monday in a federal copyright infringement case for selling modified first-gen xbox game consoles, prosecutors said. The modifications allowed the machines to play pirated video games, they said.
During the ivestigation, undercover agents with U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement paid $265 to have a modification chip, a hard drive and 77 pirated games installed on a xbox, according to the criminal complaint.
The defendants will have to appear in U.S District Court in L.A late January.
